I will never forget the morning that I decided to step on the scale and face what I had been avoiding. January 1, 2017 was life changing for me. My weight had crept up to 314 pounds - I was mortified. I could not believe that I had allowed myself to get to that point. I stepped off the scale and cried. I remember looking around the kitchen for what I could quickly eat to make myself feel better, but decided at that moment that things will change. I will no longer use food as comfort. I will eat a ketogenic diet. I had been researching keto for months prior to that eye opening moment and I knew it was time to try. I also knew that being stubborn about my goal was going to benefit me- I had an iron clad will to do this and decided that i would just learn as I went. I had to tweak a few things, but for the most part, it was a pretty easy transition. I have four children and a husband that did not eat keto. I had to prepare all of their meals and mine separately.
The first couple weeks of keto I was eating mounds of bacon and butter and eggs and trying to keep myself distracted from the gnawing sugar cravings that would rear its ugly head every night. When week two rolled around I decided to step on the scale becasue although my clothes were getting looser, I couldn’t believe that eating this way would allow the scale to move. I was shocked - I lost 12 pounds the first week! It was so motivating and encouraging that I went full force and decided to start tracking my macros and also incorporated intermittent fasting in my routine. I would go weeks sometimes with no weight loss (according to the scale) and I would get super discouraged, so I decided to ditch the scale. I would only weigh once a month and re-adjust my macros at that time. By September 10th, I had lost 114 pounds! I went from a size 26 to a size 14. My stomach discomforts were gone, my skin cleared up, and my blood pressure was normal. Since then, I am still losing at a very slow pace and have incorporated exercise in my routine as well. I absolutely love eating this way and plan on nourishing my body this way the rest of my life.
